Meet Josephine, or Joey as many of us know her as, MACA’s Dump Truck Operator Coordinator, and proud Māori. For over six and a half years she has been a vibrant member of the business, following in her mother’s footsteps.
Joey’s career began on site as muti-skilled operator. With the determination to make her mark at MACA, she took opportunities to diversify her skillset.
“I went from an operator of dump trucks, watercarts, roller, grader to site admin and got a step-up role as a Leading hand Production supervisor role.”
For the past seven months, she has delivered the new to industry training for first time dump truck operators. Her role involves facilitating a comprehensive five-day program in Welshpool and travelling to sites and reconnecting with all trainee dump truck operators.
“I really enjoy catching up with those who I have trained and seeing how I can support their continued training”.
Her commitment was recently recognized when she won last quarter’s DARE Award for Empower. This accolade celebrated her ability to motivate others and empower them with the ability to speak up. Joey helps MACA’s newest employees to navigate challenges and strive in their role.
Joey’s fondest memories of working at MACA is her promotion to a leadership role. “My best memories of working in Maca was when I got a step-up role in Leadership and my mum telling me how proud she was of me. She was very ill with cancer and each day I would finish work she would ask me what I learnt working as a supervisor for that day. Each day after telling her about my daily work and learnings she would just smile at me and say “wow, I am just so proud and grateful for all the opportunities that our family has been given.”
In her downtime, Josephine loves to listen to music and spend quality time with her children and grandchildren. Her story is a powerful reminder of how we can all connect to foster an environment of belonging and encouragement.
