Meet Janet #BreakTheBias

In the days leading up to IWD 2022, we would like to spotlight some of our wonderful female employees.

Meet Janet Bastian, our Manager of Commercial and Contracts. Nearly 10 years with MACA, Janet loves the variety her job brings each day.

“Every day brings a new opportunity to learn and grow. A lot of this is facilitated by the ‘Can Do’ attitude that I really believe is ingrained in our culture. The people make coming to work an enjoyable experience.”

“International Women’s Day is a chance to recognise how far we have come in equality compared to the generations before us, however, we still have a long way to go.

The mining industry is such a male dominated environment, and gender bias often plays a huge role in career progression and promotion opportunities.

In the near future, I hope to see a reduction in the gender pay gap in all industries. In this day and age there is absolutely no reason why both genders should not be on equal pay when undertaking the same role.

‘Breaking the Bias’ is a great theme. It captures the idea that we are all accountable for striving and reaching equality. Gender bias is not something that is unique to males, we all have unconscious biases that we apply in everyday life which undermine the strive for equality.

For example, often when we see someone in a job that is not typical for their gender, we have an initial shock reaction or feel taken aback.

It’s situations like this that we need to stop and ask ourselves why this is and how we can make this change for future generations.

“Reality is change is not always a quick process, but if we don’t keep having these conversations no change will come. We need to keep the conversation alive to be able to facilitate future change.”
