Harry ‘s career journey to date, spans a remarkable 30 years of combined service between Downer and MACA.
Harry’s mining career began at the Horseshoe Lights mine site near Meekatharra, where he worked as a serviceman with AWP Contractors. However, his time there took an unexpected turn when he was struck by a piece of corrugated iron, leading to a challenging road to recovery. Determined to continue making an impact in the industry, Harry transitioned to an Occupational Health and Safety role.
As Harry recovered, he realised his true passion lay in being on the front lines, directly involved in maintenance activities. However, due to his injury, he couldn’t return to a physical role. Instead, he took on a position in the maintenance office at Sunrise Dam, where he organised and structured the workshop. Harry also became a Cert 4 trainer for the workshop, where his passion for helping others was sparked and he had the opportunity to impart his knowledge and skills to others. It was during his time at Sunrise Dam when he became an employee of Downer in the late 90s.
Harry continued his career with Downer for the best part of three decades. His dedication and capability saw him approached with new opportunities and responsibilities throughout his career and eventually became a back-to-back Maintenance Superintendent, effectively running the workshop.
Harry’s expertise and leadership abilities led him to spend a period in Perth, setting up new mining sites and overseeing machine builds. One of his significant assignments was at Xmas Creek, where he served as the Mechanical Maintenance Superintendent. From there, Harry’s experience continued to grow with mining, working at various sites, including Cape Preston, Christmas Creek, and Roy Hill.
When MACA acquired Mining West from Downer Mining in 2021 Harry transitioned to become a MACA employee which saw him most recently posted to Gruyere.
Reflecting on his journey, Harry attributes his success to the people who supported and believed in him.
“I have enjoyed the diversity of people who have inspired and helped me to achieve and be where I am in the business today. I sometimes have never seen in myself what other people could see in me, which has also greatly inspired me in my development,” he said.
Harry finds the most rewarding aspect of his role in growing and developing people, contributing to the business’s expansion, and leaving a lasting legacy.
He strives to demonstrate the same care and inspiration that others have shown him throughout his career.
When asked about his initial attraction to the industry and the company, Harry emphasised the appeal of a fulfilling lifestyle. “To me, working FIFO has provided me with a lifestyle I enjoy and allows me to provide for my family. I have been provided with opportunities I wouldn’t have been able to achieve working in the city.”
With over three decades of experience under his belt, Harry offers valuable advice to aspiring individuals interested in joining the industry.
“It doesn’t matter where you start in the business, your career path can be endless and rewarding. Always take care of yourself and communicate with your family no matter how insignificant the conversation may be.”
Outside of work, Harry enjoys traveling and has a passion for riding motorcycles and Holden utes. He has a genuine love for food and cooking and treasures quality time with his three grandchildren. Recently, Harry also embarked on a volunteer path with EdConnect, offering assistance to children at schools.
Looking to the future, Harry envisions himself continuing his dedication to growth and mentorship.
“I want to be able to oversee and develop both sites and people to be leaders in the mining industry and give back the care and inspiration people showed me.”
Congratulations Harry on your fantastic achievement.
