At MACA, we are committed to being number one at what we do. We strive for continuous improvement and drive innovation across our business to ensure our clients are running the most efficient operations possible.
That’s why we are collaborating with world-leaders in autonomy, artificial intelligence and battery vehicle technology to create a whole of life battery solution.
We are proud to be the first contract miner to deploy artificial intelligence powered autonomy for our customers, establishing safer, more productive and more cost-effective operations.
On 9 March 2022, we entered into a binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with SafeAI and Position Partners to retrofit our mixed fleet of haul trucks with autonomous hardware and software.
Following a successful six-month proof of concept trial at Capricorn’s Karlawinda Gold operations in Western Australia, this agreement represents a significant next step in our partnership that will see us scale up our autonomy fleet over the coming years.
This next generation of autonomy has the potential to increase productivity and lower operating costs through more efficient movements which will reduce maintenance, tyre wear and fuel consumption.
The technology can be retrofitted to most types of equipment and can therefore be quickly implemented across a site or fleet. Most importantly, the introduction of autonomy will create safer outcomes for our clients by removing driver error and personnel exposure to injury or risk. At the same time, our autonomy won’t remove the need for people – it will create higher skilled roles supporting the vehicles and our team is excited by what this program could mean for the future of our business.
MACA is proud to have formalised a commitment with world-leading teams from AVL, Forsee Power and Mitsui to bring battery-powered mining equipment to life.
Electrification and autonomy go hand-in-hand. Our interoperable battery electric vehicle solution is our response to the industry’s energy transition challenge and will significantly reduce emissions.
Our whole of life battery solution will maximise the life of modular batteries by using them in less demanding requirements of our machinery fleet throughout their operational life. The full economic life of the battery will be used, beyond its first use in a haul truck.
This means after a certain state of charge that is no longer applicable to the mining operation, the modular battery can be used in other applications such as loaders, ADTs, small skid steers then finally lower energy demand units. Deploying battery retrofit solutions will help our clients reach their net zero targets to decarbonise their value chain, regardless of project size, life or commodity.
By advancing the efficiency of mineral extraction and construction we are creating sustainable futures for our people, clients and industry.
